The Denver Marathon is not taking place this year, after last year's financial mess. (The race organizers didn't pay anyone, even the race winners. Instead, they took off with the money.) There will be a half-marathon late in October, with the proceeds going to the winners of last year's Denver Marathon.

The 5:30 AM start makes this a really different Marathon right off the bat - - the first third of the race is run in the dark. Street lights provide some illumination at the starting area and through Waikiki area but some of the residental areas in the first 9 miles are quite dark. It can be windy - - it was in 1989 and it can get quite warm by 8-9 am! The course is basically out and back with a small loop at the halfway point. The only hills to mention ocurr out and back as you skirt Diamond Head. On the way back you encounter the hill at mile 24.5. Not real steep (much like Boston's Heartbreak) and it's approx 1/2 mile in length but at mile 24.5 it comes at a VERY unwelcome time. This is an extremely well organized race and a real party before and after. Not a bad way to start or end an Hawaiian vacation.

This is a point-to-point race from Arkansas City KS to Ponca City OK, commemorating the Cherokee Strip Run of 1893--the last of the great land runs in the settlement of Oklahoma. It can be run as an individual marathon or as a relay by teams of 2-4 runners. The 1995 race will be the 3rd annual edition. Most of the terrain is gently rolling and there's a good chance for a tailwind (There was a good tailwind in 1994). There is usually prize money ($1700 purse in 1994). It's also one of the most METRIC marathons in the country: Other than the upcoming Olympic Marathon in Atlanta, this may be the only current US marathon with markers at every kilometer of the 42.195 km course. (It's also marked at selected mile intervals.)
